Very EMOTIONAL News!!! EastEnders star reveals very emotional reason for major Sam Mitchell change
EastEnders actor Kim Medcalf has spoken out about the change we’ve seen in her character Sam Mitchell over the last few months. Phil and Grant’s younger sister returned to Albert Square late last year looking for money, which is business as usual for her.
However, recently she’s been showcasing a more grounded and nurturing side, something we’ll see more of this week.

“The cancer diagnosis was a huge wake‑up call. When Sam first came back, she had her head in the sand, wanting to do right by Ricky, but avoiding the reality of what might be wrong with her,” Medcalf said.
“It’s only through the support of those around her that she finds the strength to face it, which grounds her. She’s incredibly lucky that Ricky is so forgiving and emotionally mature, and I’ve loved playing this more nuanced side of Sam.
“It feels authentic for a woman her age who’s been through so much and has finally realised what means the most to her.”

It’s Nigel Bates’ funeral this week, and Sam is there for her brothers for support. But that’s not all she gets up to in the upcoming days.

She also gets involved with Mark Fowler’s story this week, creating an alibi when Lauren Branning starts asking questions, before going with Billy, Phil and Grant to deal with gangster boss Russell.
As Medcalf puts it, “The old chaotic, manipulative Sam is still very much there, just evolved. She’s a Mitchell; she’s not turning into Mary Poppins overnight!
“This week, her survival instinct kicks in, and as a mother, she understands exactly what buttons might influence Lauren and how to use that to help Mark.”
