SHOCK RETURN!!! The EastEnders return fans have prayed for as show legend stages unexpected comeback
EastEnders spoilers follow for Tuesday’s (May 26) episode, which can now be streamed on BBC iPlayer. The episode in question will air at 7:30pm.
EastEnders fans, your prayers have been answered.
Without so much as a hint, the BBC One soap left audiences who watch new offerings early via iPlayer stunned with the unexpected and long-awaited return of the Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean).
The beloved show icon, a staple of the long-running serial drama for much of its four decades on air, was last seen on the Square in October, when she departed Walford just weeks after staging a comeback.
Fans have longed to see the former Queen Vic landlady back where she belongs, with some hopeful that she might waltz back into the Walford for sister Vicki Fowler’s (Alice Haig) wedding to Ross Marshall (Alex Walkinshaw) but the waitress dispelled such a theory last week when she said she’d told Sharon not to fork out for the flights.
But in an unexpected twist on Tuesday, Sharon set foot back in the Square – and it certainly softened the blow of having to say goodbye to Sam Mitchell (Kim Medcalf) and Grant Mitchell (Ross Kemp), who departed just seconds before.

Despite what Vicki had told her over the phone, Sharon was adamant that she ‘couldn’t miss’ her little sister walking down the aisle, with the siblings sharing a heartwarming reunion.
The question is: is she back for good? And, in addition to attending Vicki and Ross’ nuptials, just what will she get up to while frequenting Walford?
Grant may be gone but there’s plenty of her friends, neighbours and former flames still around – not to mention Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan), who attempted to con her out of her cash with a cruel lie about her son also being Dennis Rickman’s (Nigel Harman).
Will Sharon be willing to forgive and forget? Or will the former foes be feuding once more?

We’ll just have to wait and see – but what a treat to have the queen of Albert Square back home.
Her comeback follows a string of surprise returns, with Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty) – who left two years ago – making an announced appearance on Monday.
Chrissie Watts (Tracy-Ann Oberman), who was revealed to be Jasmine Fisher’s (Indeyarna Donaldson-Holness) accomplice, similarly staged a number of shocking returns this year, while a ghostly Nish Panesar (Navin Chowdhry) also popped up at one point.
The superb comeback of Cora Cross (Ann Mitchell)and that unexpected appearance from Dr Nina Gupta (Hersha Verity) also proved popular with fans.
Walford fans, brace yourselves — because Tuesday’s episode delivers one of the most unexpected shake-ups of the year, and it all begins with a face viewers never thought they would see walking back through the Square again.
After months of silence and speculation, Zack Hudson suddenly finds himself at the centre of a storyline that pulls several families together in ways nobody saw coming. Just when life in Walford seemed to settle into a fragile calm, everything is turned upside down by a return that sends shockwaves through the community.
At the Queen Vic, tensions are already running high following ongoing money troubles and unresolved emotional baggage between regulars. But the atmosphere shifts dramatically when whispers begin circulating that someone from Zack’s past has been spotted near Albert Square. At first, nobody believes it — after all, Walford is full of rumours that go nowhere. But within minutes, those rumours become reality.
And then it happens.
A familiar figure steps into view, and the reaction is instant. Conversations stop mid-sentence, glasses are lowered, and even the most hardened locals are left stunned. The return is not just unexpected — it is deeply unsettling for those who know the truth behind Zack’s history.
The mystery visitor is revealed to be Sam Mitchell, making a shock reappearance in Walford after her sudden disappearance months earlier. Her return is not announced, not hinted at, and certainly not welcomed with advance warning. Instead, she simply appears, as though she never truly left.
For Zack, the moment is devastatingly complicated. Their shared past carries unresolved tension, emotional damage, and secrets that were never properly addressed before she vanished. Now, with Sam standing in front of him again, all of that buried history resurfaces at once.
Meanwhile, at the Mitchell household, the news spreads fast. Phil Mitchell is immediately suspicious, convinced that Sam’s return is not as simple as it looks. His instincts tell him there is more going on beneath the surface — and in Walford, he is rarely wrong.
Kat Slater is also drawn into the chaos when she overhears fragments of a conversation that suggest Sam may not be back for sentimental reasons at all. Instead, there are hints of financial trouble, hidden debts, and a desperate need for help that Sam has brought back with her into the Square.
But Sam refuses to explain herself clearly. Every question she is asked is met with half-truths or deflections, deepening the mystery surrounding her return. It quickly becomes clear that she is carrying something far heavier than anyone expected.
Elsewhere, tensions rise between Linda Carter and the regulars at the Vic as she struggles to maintain order while everything around her begins to spiral. Customers notice the shift immediately — the pub no longer feels like a place of comfort, but rather the centre of incoming storm clouds.
As the episode unfolds, Zack is forced into a corner when Sam finally reveals she did not come back to Walford by choice. Instead, she claims she is being pursued by someone from outside the Square — someone who believes she holds information that could expose a long-buried secret involving multiple residents.
This revelation changes everything.
Suddenly, Sam’s return is no longer just a personal drama — it becomes a threat to the entire community. If what she is saying is true, then several people in Walford could find themselves dragged into consequences they never signed up for.
Phil immediately takes control of the situation, insisting that Sam stay somewhere safe until the truth is fully understood. But Sam resists, arguing that nowhere is safe, not even in the heart of Albert Square. Her paranoia begins to spread, and soon others start questioning whether they are also being watched.
At the same time, Ravi Gulati becomes increasingly involved after a chance encounter with Sam outside the Minute Mart. Their brief exchange hints at a shared connection that neither of them fully explains. Ravi’s reaction suggests he may know more than he is willing to admit, adding another layer of tension to the unfolding mystery.
Back at the Slater household, Kat is torn between protecting her family and getting involved in yet another Mitchell-related crisis. With tensions already high, she warns Zack to keep his distance from Sam until the full truth comes out. But Zack is clearly conflicted — his past with Sam makes it impossible for him to walk away cleanly.
As night falls in Walford, the situation escalates further when an unknown figure is seen watching the Queen Vic from across the street. The identity of this observer is not revealed, but their presence confirms Sam’s fears — she is not imagining the danger she is in.
The final moments of the episode deliver a chilling turn. Sam receives a message on her phone containing only a single sentence: “You should never have come back.”
Her expression says everything — whatever she is running from has now found her in Walford.
The episode ends on a tense cliffhanger, leaving viewers questioning not only Sam’s motives but also how far the fallout will spread across the Square. Is she telling the truth, or is she bringing trouble directly to the people she claims to be protecting?
One thing is certain: Sam Mitchell’s return has reopened old wounds, revived dangerous connections, and set the stage for a storyline that could reshape relationships across the entire community.
And with secrets beginning to surface in every direction, Walford may not be ready for what comes next.
