SHOCKING NEWS!!! EastEnders star responds to Den and Angie comparisons for Cindy and Max

EastEnders star Michelle Collins has responded to comparisons between her character Cindy Beale’s storyline with Max Branning and Den and Angie Watts. Scenes earlier this week saw Max get down on one knee to propose to Cindy at Vicki Fowler and Ross Marshall’s wedding.

While she initially rejected him, Cindy changed her mind and accepted the proposal – unaware that Max cheated on her after the wedding with Priya Nandra-Hart.

Michelle has now addressed potential similarities between their match and the infamously toxic relationship between Den and Angie in the soap’s early days, calling it “such a compliment”.

“A few people have said that, it’s the Den and Angie kind of relationship,” she said on Lorraine. “Everyone loves them, and they weren’t even there that long but people still talk about it. I think it’s that sparring, that gives it that spark.”

She added: “I like working with Jake [Wood]. He’s a bit crazy like me. We both like a drama in life, and they are kind of chaotic.”

Speaking further about Cindy and Max, Michelle noted that there is “a very fine line between love and hate” among the pair.

“Cindy didn’t ever know Max, their paths didn’t really cross,” she said. “She hated him, he’s had a lot of history with her children. I think she was determined not to like him from the very beginning. But as you’ve seen, they’re quite similar.

“I know it’s a bit overused, that narcissistic kind of word, but I think they kind of are. They’ve both been in prison. If she did get married, [this would be] her third marriage. It would be his fifth, apparently.

“They have very complicated families, estranged children… so it could be a marriage made in heaven or it could be complete and utter hell and chaos.”

Meanwhile, the soap recently made a last minute change after Michelle suffered a real-life accident, with Cindy seen on screen in crutches.

Michelle Collins has opened up about the growing fascination surrounding Cindy Beale and Max Branning’s turbulent romance in EastEnders, revealing why she believes viewers are so captivated by the pair despite their seemingly endless cycle of conflict, betrayal, and emotional chaos.

The actress, who returned to the role of Cindy Beale in dramatic fashion, admitted that she has been surprised by just how strongly fans have reacted to Cindy’s unexpected relationship with Max. What began as mutual hostility has gradually evolved into one of the soap’s most talked-about storylines, with many viewers drawing comparisons to some of EastEnders’ most iconic couples.

Earlier this week, audiences watched as Max Branning stunned wedding guests by proposing to Cindy during the celebrations of Vicki Fowler and Ross Marshall. Although Cindy initially rejected the proposal, she later reconsidered and accepted, believing that perhaps she and Max had finally found some stability amid the turmoil that constantly surrounds them.

However, as soap fans know all too well, happiness rarely lasts long in Albert Square.

Unbeknownst to Cindy, Max’s actions following the wedding have already placed their future in jeopardy. His betrayal threatens to destroy the fragile trust that had only recently begun to develop between them, setting the stage for what could become another devastating chapter in their relationship.

Speaking about the storyline, Collins explained that the appeal of Cindy and Max lies in the fact that neither character is particularly easy to love.

“They’re both incredibly flawed people,” she noted. “Neither of them is trying to be perfect. They’ve both made terrible decisions over the years, and they both carry a lot of emotional baggage. I think that’s what makes them interesting.”

The actress suggested that viewers often gravitate toward characters who are messy and unpredictable because they create tension whenever they appear on screen.

“There are some couples where you know exactly what’s going to happen,” she said. “With Cindy and Max, you never really know. One minute they’re supporting each other, and the next they’re tearing each other apart.”

That unpredictability has led many longtime EastEnders viewers to compare the pair to legendary soap romances from previous decades. While some relationships are remembered for their devotion and loyalty, others become iconic because of the constant conflict that fuels them.

According to Collins, the comparisons are flattering because they suggest that audiences see something memorable in Cindy and Max’s dynamic.

The actress acknowledged that relationships built on confrontation often leave the biggest impression on viewers. Rather than simply agreeing with one another, Cindy and Max challenge each other at every turn. Their arguments are explosive, their reconciliations are emotional, and their mistakes frequently have consequences that ripple across Albert Square.

Fans have pointed out that both characters share remarkably similar personalities.

Over the years, Cindy has repeatedly put her own desires ahead of those around her, often creating turmoil for her family. Max, meanwhile, has built a reputation as one of the Square’s most controversial figures, leaving a trail of broken relationships and damaged friendships behind him.

Collins believes these similarities explain why the pair have been drawn together despite their differences.

“They understand each other in a way that other people probably can’t,” she explained. “They’ve both experienced rejection, they’ve both hurt people they love, and they’ve both spent years trying to rebuild relationships that were damaged by their own actions.”

Their shared history of mistakes has created an unusual connection, allowing them to relate to one another on a deeper level than many of the other couples currently featured in the soap.

Another factor that has intrigued viewers is the complicated nature of their families.

Both Cindy and Max have experienced strained relationships with their children, and both have struggled to maintain healthy family bonds. These personal difficulties have often left them isolated, making their connection with each other even more significant.

Yet that same emotional complexity could ultimately become the reason their romance collapses.

Soap fans have frequently debated whether Cindy and Max genuinely love each other or whether they are simply attracted to the familiarity of chaos.

Some viewers argue that the pair bring out the worst in one another, encouraging destructive behaviour rather than growth. Others believe they have finally found someone capable of understanding their flaws without judgment.

Collins admitted that even she is uncertain about where the relationship might lead.

“It’s hard to say whether they’re perfect for each other or a complete disaster waiting to happen,” she said. “Maybe they’re both.”

That uncertainty has become one of the storyline’s greatest strengths.

Unlike many soap romances that clearly position one partner as the hero and the other as the villain, Cindy and Max exist in a morally grey area. Both characters have made questionable decisions, and both continue to wrestle with the consequences of their past actions.

As a result, viewers are constantly reassessing their opinions about the couple.

One week audiences may find themselves rooting for them to succeed, while the next they may be convinced the relationship is doomed.

The emotional rollercoaster has generated significant discussion among fans, many of whom have taken to social media to debate whether Cindy should trust Max at all.

Recent developments have only intensified those conversations.

With secrets already threatening to emerge and tensions continuing to build, many viewers suspect that the engagement could be heading toward disaster. Others remain hopeful that the couple might overcome the obstacles standing in their way.

Whatever happens next, Collins is confident that audiences will remain invested.

She believes the storyline works because it reflects the complicated reality of human relationships rather than presenting a fairy-tale romance.

“People are complicated,” she explained. “Love is complicated. Sometimes the people we’re drawn to aren’t necessarily the people who are best for us.”

That sentiment perfectly captures the essence of Cindy and Max’s relationship.

They are not a conventional couple. Their romance is messy, unpredictable, and often frustrating. Yet those very qualities have transformed them into one of the most compelling pairings currently on EastEnders.

As the engagement drama continues to unfold, viewers can expect more secrets, more confrontations, and undoubtedly more heartbreak.

Whether Cindy and Max ultimately walk down the aisle or watch their relationship implode remains to be seen. But if recent events are any indication, their journey is far from over.

And in Albert Square, where happiness is often temporary and drama is never in short supply, that may be exactly what fans are hoping for.
